Lahore, June 5: The U-18 Asia Cup Hockey Tournament in Japan is heating up as India and Pakistan prepare to face off in the semifinals on Friday. Ahead of this highly anticipated match, a Pakistani team official has labeled India as the strong favorite to win. He believes that India’s superior preparation and facilities will give them an edge.
Pakistan secured their semifinal spot by defeating China 5-2 in their final group match held in Kakogamihara, Japan, on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Indian team has displayed remarkable form throughout the tournament, notably thrashing Kazakhstan 13-0 in the group stage. They also showcased their prowess with a convincing 4-1 victory over South Korea.
Indian players have demonstrated a balanced approach in both attack and defense. The host nation, Japan, has also performed admirably, winning against India, Chinese Taipei, and South Korea. Defending champions Japan will face Malaysia in the other semifinal match.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, a Pakistani hockey official told ‘Telecom Asia Sport’ on Thursday, “India’s preparation for the tournament has been excellent. They played five matches against Australian juniors and toured Europe, while 12 of our players are on their first tour and lack international experience.”
The official added, “When both teams train, it’s a different scenario. The Indian team practices with 150 Kookaburra balls, while we have only 12, and the rest are of inferior quality. Their hockey sticks are also superior.”
Despite these challenges, the Pakistani players are filled with enthusiasm and are determined to perform their best. “Regardless of the situation, we will give our all. When facing India, the motivation level among our players is different,” he noted.
Historically, India has dominated junior events against Pakistan. In their last eight encounters, India has won seven and drawn one. Pakistan’s last victory over India at the junior level was in 2016 in Johar Baro. The Indian team aims to maintain this dominance.
