Uttar Pradesh Government Boosts Advocate Fees, Welcomed by Legal Community

Lucknow, June 5: The Uttar Pradesh government’s decision to increase the retainer and argument fees for government advocates representing the state in various courts has been warmly welcomed by the legal community. Advocates have expressed heartfelt gratitude towards Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for this long-awaited decision. The state’s Advocate General and his entire team have labeled it a historic move.

In a statement, advocates noted that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath recognized the need for effective representation of state interests in courts. Under his leadership, the state cabinet has fulfilled the long-standing expectations of the advocate community by approving a significant increase in retainer and argument fees. This decision is not merely about fee increments; it represents a crucial step towards making the judicial system more capable, accountable, and results-oriented. It will enhance the quality and timeliness of the state’s representation in court cases.

Advocates highlighted that this decision will benefit a wide range of legal professionals, including district government advocates, additional district government advocates, assistant district government advocates, designated advocates, special advocates, and amici curiae, as well as those representing the state in the High Court of Allahabad, Lucknow bench, and the Supreme Court.

They emphasized the need for a revision of the fee structure, given the changing judicial landscape, the rising number of cases, complex legal issues, and increased responsibilities of advocates. Notably, it has been nearly ten years since the fees for district court advocates were revised and about fourteen years for those at the Advocate General level. This reflects the government’s sensitivity and foresight.

By accepting the concept of timely revision, the Chief Minister has decided on a 50% increase in retainer and per-hearing fees. This will boost the morale of advocates, enhance the effectiveness of representation in significant state matters, and ensure that the state’s position is presented robustly in courts.

All concerned advocates expressed their gratitude to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, stating that the state government has honored the contributions of advocates while strengthening the judicial system. This decision signifies the government’s commitment to protecting state interests, reinforcing good governance, and ensuring effective implementation of justice.
