AIADMK Cancels Meeting Amid Support for TVK in Tamil Nadu Political Shift

Chennai, May 6: A significant turn has emerged in Tamil Nadu’s post-election political landscape. On Wednesday, the AIADMK unexpectedly canceled its scheduled meeting of newly elected legislators. This decision comes amid reports of deep divisions within the party regarding support for the TVK government led by actor-turned-politician Vijay.

This development arises as Vijay’s party, TVK, has emerged as the largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, winning 108 seats in its first electoral contest. However, it still falls short of the majority mark of 118 in the 234-member assembly. To establish a stable government, TVK requires the support of at least 10 more legislators.

As the largest party, it is anticipated that the Governor will invite TVK to form the government. Vijay is likely to take the oath as Chief Minister and must prove his majority on the assembly floor within the deadline set by the Governor.

TVK contested the elections independently, without any pre-poll alliances, making its hold on power largely dependent on support from parties aligned with either the DMK or AIADMK.

Speculation about AIADMK’s potential support for TVK intensified when reports surfaced that a faction within the party is in favor of offering unconditional backing to TVK. This move aims to prevent the DMK from returning to power through any alternative arrangement.

Against this backdrop, AIADMK had convened a meeting of its newly elected legislators in Chennai on Wednesday, with expectations of a significant political decision. However, the last-minute cancellation of the meeting has sparked widespread speculation about growing rifts within the party leadership.

Political sources indicate that the cancellation is linked to ongoing disagreements within AIADMK regarding whether the party should support Vijay’s government. While one faction reportedly favors external support for TVK, another group strongly opposes any form of agreement with the new party. Reports suggest that internal strife has increased pressure on AIADMK’s General Secretary, Palaniswami, as the party struggles to formulate a clear post-election strategy following its defeat in the assembly elections.

Experts believe that the coming days will be crucial in determining whether Vijay can gather the necessary numbers to form the next government in Tamil Nadu.
