Ahmedabad Police Intensifies Security Measures Ahead of Local Elections

Ahmedabad, April 25: In preparation for the upcoming local body elections in Gujarat, the Ahmedabad rural police have significantly strengthened their enforcement and security measures. As part of these efforts, police have seized illegal liquor worth over ₹1 crore and intensified preventive actions ahead of the voting scheduled for April 26.

Officials reported that during ongoing operations, 5,360 liters of country-made liquor valued at ₹10.72 lakh and 16,976 bottles of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) worth ₹96.94 lakh were confiscated.

Between April 1 and April 25, the police conducted 5,192 preventive actions and registered 870 cases related to liquor prohibition. During this period, authorities initiated 81 eviction proposals, 25 proposals under the Prevention of Anti-Social Activities Act (PASA), and 60 other legal actions.

A total of 1,687 weapons were surrendered, 20 check-posts were established, and 41,075 vehicles were inspected. The police also monitored 159 history-sheeters under precautionary surveillance.

For election duty, a total of 3,251 police personnel have been deployed in Ahmedabad rural district, including one Superintendent of Police, four Deputy Superintendents, 34 Inspectors, 72 Sub-Inspectors, 1,249 constables, 173 Local Reserve Police (LRD) personnel, 1,537 Home Guards and GRD staff, 57 State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) personnel, 114 officers from other districts, 75 mobile patrol units, and 22 rapid response teams.

Officials have identified 1,302 polling stations across the district. Among these, 41 are categorized as highly sensitive, 408 as sensitive, and 853 as normal. These arrangements cover elections for the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, three municipalities, 34 district panchayat seats, and 176 taluka panchayat seats.

Additionally, the Ahmedabad rural police have activated the ADR-SHIELD platform as a digital command-and-control center for real-time election monitoring. Launched on April 18, this upgraded system is a fully integrated platform for district-level surveillance, building on a pilot project used during last year’s village panchayat elections.

The ADR-SHIELD portal provides integrated data related to elections, booth-level information, police deployment plans, real-time monitoring, Google Map-based surveillance, and daily reporting. It offers a comprehensive overview of the entire district, as officials noted, while also providing detailed booth-level information to assist in monitoring and coordination.

Access to this platform has been granted to key district officials, including the District Collector, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Returning Officer, Assistant Returning Officers, election observers, and senior police officers.

Voting will take place from 7 AM to 6 PM. Elections are being held for municipalities, district panchayats, and taluka panchayats in Ahmedabad district and other parts of Gujarat.

District Election Officer and Collector Sujit Kumar urged voters to participate in large numbers, stating that elections are “not just a process, but a festival” where citizens can choose their representatives and engage in local governance.

He assured that arrangements have been made to ensure smooth voting at all centers, noting that in light of the heat, drinking water, shade facilities, and medical teams have been deployed at polling stations.

To ensure a peaceful, free, and fair election process, the police and district administration have strengthened security arrangements.
