₹4 Lakh Discount Fails to Revive Sales of Hyundai Ioniq 5: Only 11 Units Sold in May

Despite slashing ₹4 lakh off the sticker price, Hyundai’s flagship electric SUV, the Ioniq 5, continues to struggle in India’s premium EV market. The company managed to sell just 11 units of the Ioniq 5 in May 2025, marking its worst monthly performance since launch and raising questions about customer interest in high-end electric mobility under the Hyundai brand.

May Sales Disappointment for Hyundai

Hyundai Motor India slipped from second to third place in the overall car sales rankings last month. While models like the Creta, Venue, and Exter continue to perform well in the SUV segment, the company’s more premium offerings — the Ioniq 5 and Tucson — dragged overall numbers down. The Ioniq 5, in particular, saw its lowest-ever monthly sales, down from 19 units in March and 16 units in both January and February.

This weak market response came despite aggressive discounting, reflecting waning customer interest and signaling a clear preference shift toward newer or more affordable EV options.

Massive ₹4 Lakh Discount Yields Little Impact

The Ioniq 5 was introduced in January 2023 at an introductory price of ₹44.95 lakh. Over time, the ex-showroom price increased to ₹46.05 lakh. In an attempt to stimulate demand, Hyundai recently offered a flat ₹4 lakh discount, reducing the price to ₹42.05 lakh. However, this substantial markdown failed to generate meaningful interest from potential buyers.

Industry experts suggest the looming arrival of the more affordable and mass-market-focused Creta EV might be causing customers to delay their purchases. For buyers, the Ioniq 5’s futuristic design and premium features may not outweigh its high pricing and niche positioning in a competitive market.

Premium Design and Sustainable Cabin

The Ioniq 5’s appeal lies in its avant-garde design and eco-conscious materials. It measures 4634mm in length, 1890mm in width, and 1625mm in height, supported by an expansive 3000mm wheelbase. The interior is crafted with sustainable materials — including recycled plastics and bio-based components on the dashboard, door panels, and even the steering wheel.

Its futuristic layout includes pixel-inspired design elements and a soft-touch finish, giving the cabin a premium and modern feel.

High-End Technology and Safety Features

Inside, the Ioniq 5 offers an advanced tech setup, headlined by a dual 12.3-inch display for the digital instrument cluster and infotainment unit. It also includes a head-up display, electric parking brake, and four-disc brakes. Safety is a major highlight, with Level 2 ADAS capabilities and 21 safety features such as 6 airbags, multi-collision avoidance braking, and power child locks.

These offerings position the Ioniq 5 as one of the most feature-rich EVs in its segment — but that hasn’t translated into consistent sales.

Battery, Range, and Fast Charging Capability

The Ioniq 5 is powered by a 72.6kWh battery and delivers an ARAI-certified range of 631 km on a single charge. Its rear-wheel-drive setup produces 217hp and 350Nm of torque, offering a balance of performance and efficiency.

One of its standout features is ultra-fast charging. With an 800V charging system, the vehicle can go from 10% to 80% charge in just 18 minutes when connected to a compatible superfast charger — a significant advantage for long-distance EV travel.

What Lies Ahead

While the Ioniq 5 remains a technological showcase for Hyundai, its tepid response in the Indian market suggests that high-end EV buyers remain cautious. The rising anticipation around the more accessible Creta EV could further impact Ioniq 5 sales in the months to come. Hyundai may need to rethink its premium EV strategy in India to keep pace with evolving consumer expectations and increasing competition.
