
Bengaluru, May 23: Illya Ivashka and Petr Bar Biryukov have secured their spots in the men’s singles final of the SM Krishna Memorial Open. They achieved this by defeating their respective opponents in the semifinals. Ivashka triumphed over Britain’s third-seed Hamish Stewart, while Biryukov overcame Alastair Gray. The final match is scheduled for Saturday.
In the semifinals held on Friday, Ivashka defeated Stewart with a score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Biryukov’s match against Gray was equally thrilling, ending with a score of 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5).
The Belarusian player Ivashka showcased his precise serves and clean shots, taking the first set 6-3. Stewart made a strong comeback in the second set, winning it 6-3 to level the match. However, Ivashka dominated the decisive set, winning it 6-2 to advance to the final.
In the second semifinal, Biryukov displayed powerful serves and impressive forehands to defeat Gray in a nail-biting three-set match lasting 2 hours and 1 minute. Gray started strong, breaking Biryukov in the first game and taking the first set 6-3. Biryukov responded by winning the second set 6-4. The final set saw several twists, with Biryukov initially taking a break in the fifth game. Gray fought back, breaking Biryukov in the tenth game to push the match to a tiebreak, where Biryukov clinched victory at 7-5.
In the doubles category, Indian hopes remain high as Adil Kalyanpur and Mukund Shashikumar continued their impressive performance. They defeated the second-seeded pair of Ireland’s Charles Barry and Australia’s Joshua Charlton in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, to reach the final. However, the other Indian duo, Niki Kalyanda Poonacha and Saket Maineni, faced defeat against Kazakhstan’s Petr Bar Biryukov and Grigory Lomakin, losing 3-6, 4-6.
