U.S. Secretary of State Rubio to Visit India Amid Tensions with Iran

New Delhi, May 23: Amid escalating tensions with Iran, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to visit India. Prior to his two-nation tour, Rubio revealed that the U.S. has been in high-level contact with Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir regarding discussions with Iran.

During a media briefing, Rubio addressed the current situation in the Strait of Hormuz, stating, “I hope we can all see an agreement with Iran that keeps the strait open and leads them to abandon their nuclear ambitions. This is what we are working towards, even as I speak to you now.”

He emphasized the need for a backup plan, saying, “What if Iran refuses to open the straits? If they decide to close the Strait of Hormuz, we may have to take control and impose tolls. At that point, we need to consider our options, as there are countries affected even more than the U.S.”

Rubio urged for proactive thinking, questioning, “What if in a few weeks Iran decides it doesn’t care and keeps the Strait closed? What actions will we take against vessels that ignore our warnings or refuse to pay? We must start planning for such scenarios.”

On Pakistan’s role in negotiations with Iran, Rubio stated, “Pakistan has been the primary negotiator in this matter and will continue to be. They have done an excellent job, and we are collaborating closely. Other countries, particularly those in the Gulf, also have stakes in this situation, and we are in discussions with them. However, the key country we are working with is Pakistan.”

Rubio also mentioned that Field Marshal Munir is expected to visit Iran soon, indicating that high-level communications between the U.S. and Pakistan are ongoing.
