Bhubaneswar, May 23: The Commissionerate Police arrested a man on Friday for impersonating an officer of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and attempting to mislead individuals regarding a false complaint made by a woman.
The accused has been identified as 45-year-old Ashish Reddy, a resident of Lajpat Nagar in Delhi. He was allegedly trying to influence the investigation of a case registered in the Kharavel Nagar police station area.
According to police reports, the victim had recently filed a complaint stating that she was sexually assaulted by unknown individuals near the Puri-Konark road in April.
During the investigation, authorities discovered that Reddy, who knew the victim, was posing as a senior NIA officer to manipulate the inquiry. He pressured the investigating officials and played a significant role in drafting the complaint. Verification with the NIA confirmed that Ashish Reddy was not affiliated with the agency and was falsely claiming to be an officer.
Further investigations revealed that the victim admitted her earlier allegations of kidnapping and sexual assault were fabricated. She informed the police that the complaint was made under the influence of the accused following a personal dispute.
The police also found that Reddy had contacted the woman under the pretense of offering help and subsequently exploited her. He allegedly prepared a false FIR, which was initially submitted at the Infocity police station and later forwarded to Kharavel Nagar police.
During the investigation, police seized a fake NIA identity card, a T-shirt bearing the NIA logo, a vehicle, a mobile phone, and other items from the accused.
Charges have been filed against Reddy under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act. The police are continuing to investigate his previous records and involvement in other cases.
