Bhopal, May 23: The initiative to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Madhya Pradesh has taken a significant turn. Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav launched the official UCC MP website on Friday.
The primary aim of this important step is to gather public opinions and suggestions before finalizing the law, ensuring participation from all sections of society.
While launching the website, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav stated that this platform will provide citizens with the opportunity to directly convey their thoughts and suggestions to the government.
He expressed confidence that a balanced and widely accepted Uniform Civil Code could be developed through a transparent and participatory process tailored to the state’s needs.
The government has set June 15, 2026, as the deadline for submitting suggestions, allowing ample time for public input.
The goal of the Uniform Civil Code is to replace religion-based personal laws with a uniform law applicable to all citizens in matters such as marriage, divorce, property, adoption, and maintenance.
Madhya Pradesh is following the path of Uttarakhand and Gujarat, where significant steps have already been taken towards implementing the UCC.
This move aligns with the long-standing commitment of the Bharatiya Janata Party to implement a Uniform Civil Code across the country, as stated in Article 44 of the Constitution.
The chairperson of the high-level committee formed for the UCC, retired Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, participated in the event virtually.
This committee, established at the end of April 2026, is tasked with preparing a detailed draft of the UCC. Other members of the expert committee were also present during the website launch. Justice Desai has previously led similar processes in other states.
The Madhya Pradesh government has clarified that all suggestions received through the portal will be thoroughly examined and considered in the next steps of the bill preparation process.
This public consultation process is seen as a crucial step toward building consensus on such a sensitive and long-debated issue.
