High Court Orders Removal of Encroachments on Ancient Kunds in Ayodhya

Ayodhya, May 23: The issue of encroachments on ancient kunds in Ayodhya has reached the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court. This case pertains to the Sumitra Kund and Kaushalya Kund, which have been encroached upon by local residents. Following the hearing, the High Court directed the district administration to remove the encroachments within a week and ensure the protection of these kunds.

A public interest petition was filed in the High Court by Mahant Raju Das, the head of the Hindu Security Service Association and the priest of the Siddhpeeth Hanumangarhi. The petition seeks the preservation of the ancient and mythological Kaushalya Kund and Sumitra Kund, located in the Bag Bijaisi area under Ayodhya Sadar Tehsil, and demands that the public pathway leading to these kunds be kept free from encroachments.

Raju Das stated that the land of these ancient kunds has been under occupation for a long time. He alleged that certain land mafias have encroached around the kunds, attempting to erase their original identity. He mentioned that complaints had been made to the administration previously, but no concrete action was taken at that time.

He emphasized that the court has issued clear instructions for the immediate removal of any encroachments on the kunds’ land. The administration has also been directed to secure these historical and religious sites to maintain their identity and significance.

According to Raju Das, the petition highlighted that for nearly four decades, the main public pathway to these two mythological kunds has been through populated areas. Currently, due to the construction of two water tanks in the southern direction of the population, the pathway leading to the kunds is being acquired for land compensation, even though both tanks were approved in separate wards. This has led to an increase in complaints about encroachments on surrounding land. He noted that gradually the entire area has been encircled, putting the existence of the kunds at risk.
