Sambhal, May 23: The management committee of the historic Jama Masjid in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, has urgently requested repairs for the mosque’s dilapidated wall and main entrance. The committee warns that the main gate is in extremely poor condition and could collapse at any moment, posing a significant risk of an accident.
The committee has sent a letter to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to inform them of the situation, but no action has been taken by the department so far.
Zafar Ali, the head of the Jama Masjid committee, stated in an interview that a registered letter was dispatched to the archaeology department’s office in Meerut on May 16. This letter detailed the dire state of the mosque’s main entrance and called for immediate repairs. He emphasized that the gate is completely dilapidated, and the threat of its collapse is ever-present. If repairs are not undertaken promptly, a major incident could occur.
Zafar Ali also mentioned that a wall adjacent to the mosque has already been damaged and brought down by monkeys. This has raised serious concerns about the security of the mosque premises. He urged that both the fallen wall and the main entrance be repaired as soon as possible to prevent any untoward incidents.
The committee head made it clear that the Jama Masjid is a protected monument under the ASI, making the department fully responsible for its maintenance and repairs.
He stated that the mosque committee has issued a timely warning to the department, but there has been no response or action to date. He cautioned that if an accident occurs in the future resulting in loss of life or property, the ASI will bear full responsibility.
