Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma Reaffirms Commitment to People-Centric Governance

Shillong, May 23: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma reiterated his government’s commitment to “people-centric governance and participatory development” on Friday. He emphasized the need for direct engagement with citizens to address their real needs through development programs and urban infrastructure projects.

While addressing residents during the ‘Legislator Contact’ program in Machikolongre, Tura, Sangma stated that the government is dedicated to transforming Tura into a modern, clean, and well-planned urban center through continuous investment in infrastructure, improved civic services, beautification initiatives, and the creation of public spaces.

He noted that regular ground tours and public consultations help coordinate departments more effectively and enable faster implementation of projects at the grassroots level.

During the dialogue, residents, local leaders, youth organizations, and community representatives raised various issues related to roads, drainage, sanitation, electricity, water supply, and urban infrastructure.

Local residents informed the Chief Minister that slippery roads during the monsoon hinder garbage collection vehicles from reaching certain areas, complicating waste management and sanitation efforts.

In response to these concerns, Sangma instructed the Tura Municipal Board (TMB) to consider temporary measures to ensure uninterrupted garbage collection services in the region.

He also mentioned that the government would explore the feasibility of introducing garbage collection vehicles in remote areas and adverse weather conditions in the long term.

Residents highlighted the deplorable condition of a non-governmental primary school in the area, requesting assistance for infrastructure improvements, including fencing, electricity and water connections, toilet facilities, and playground equipment for children.

The Chief Minister assured that the issues would be investigated for necessary intervention and support. A local youth organization also requested assistance for the development of a basketball court and youth infrastructure.

Sangma responded positively, promising to support sports, cultural activities, and creative youth engagement by providing sports equipment and musical instruments.
