Sharjeel Imam to Surrender at Tihar Jail as Interim Bail Expires

New Delhi, March 30: Sharjeel Imam, accused in the Delhi riots case, is set to surrender at Tihar Jail on Monday. A Delhi court granted him a 10-day interim bail, which is now expiring, related to the alleged larger conspiracy behind the Northeast Delhi riots of 2020.

The Karkardooma court had allowed Imam interim bail from March 20 to March 30 under strict conditions. This was to enable him to attend his younger brother’s wedding and care for his ill mother.

Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai imposed several stringent restrictions while granting temporary relief. Imam was required to furnish a personal bond of ₹50,000 and present two sureties of the same amount. The court also prohibited him from interacting with the media or using social media during the interim bail period.

Moreover, the court instructed Imam to meet only with family members, relatives, and friends, explicitly forbidding contact with any witnesses or individuals related to the case.

He was also mandated to keep his mobile phone operational at all times and share his number with the investigating officer. During the interim bail, Imam was allowed to stay either at his residence or at the wedding venues as specified in his application.

In his plea for interim bail, Imam cited his responsibility for managing wedding arrangements and supporting his family, particularly his ailing mother, as his sole brother’s burden.

The prosecution opposed this plea, arguing that his presence at the ceremonies was not essential and that adequate arrangements had already been made by the family. They also contended that there was no medical emergency necessitating his release.

Imam is among several student activists charged under various sections of the UAPA and the Indian Penal Code concerning the alleged conspiracy behind the February 2020 Northeast Delhi riots.
