Bhubaneswar, April 8: The District and Sessions Court in Kyonjhar, Odisha, has sentenced three individuals to life imprisonment for a murder that occurred in 2022.
The convicted individuals have been identified as Uttam Kumar Mahakud, Upendra Kumar Behera, and Navkishore Mahakud. In addition to their prison sentences, they have been ordered to pay a fine of ₹10,000. According to the court’s ruling, failure to pay the fine will result in an additional year of imprisonment.
The victim, Mayadhar Behera, aged 48, was from the Kadalakola village, located in the Nayakot police jurisdiction of Kyonjhar district. He operated a chicken and egg shop in the local market.
General Prosecutor Pradeep Kumar Das stated, “On February 26, 2022, around 8 PM, Uttam Mahakud arrived at the victim’s shop, where a heated argument ensued over some past issues. In a fit of rage, Uttam returned home and came back with the other accused, Navkishore Mahakud and Upendra Behera, about half an hour later.”
The prosecutor further explained that Upendra was aggrieved due to a longstanding feud with the victim. Armed with dangerous weapons, the accused attacked the victim brutally at his shop, leading to his death on the spot.
After the incident, the assailants fled, leaving the victim’s body lying in a pool of blood. Following a complaint lodged by the victim’s elder brother, the police registered a case and initiated an investigation.
The next day, police arrested Uttam and Upendra, while Navkishore was apprehended on March 22, 2022.
After examining the evidence, the court found the defendants guilty and delivered its verdict on Wednesday. Pradeep Kumar Das represented the prosecution in this case.
