
New Delhi, May 26: Indian freestyle wrestlers showcased their exceptional talent at the Under-23 Asian Championship held in Da Nang, Vietnam. On Tuesday, the wrestlers secured four more medals for the country on the fourth day of the competition.
Mohit Kumar and Chandramohan each won gold medals in their respective weight categories. Deepak earned a silver medal in the 61 kg category, while another Indian wrestler named Deepak claimed a bronze in the 74 kg category.
With these victories, India’s total medal count in freestyle wrestling has reached six. This builds on the previous day’s success, where Akshay T. Dhere (57 kg) and Vicky (97 kg) both secured gold medals.
Mohit displayed complete control during his gold medal bout in the 65 kg category, defeating Kyrgyzstan’s Oskonbai A. Abdisamatov with a score of 12-4. Later, Chandramohan achieved an exciting victory against Kazakhstan’s Yerkan Abil, winning 7-6 to secure the title in the 79 kg category. In the 61 kg final, Deepak faced a close match against Kazakhstan’s Nurdant Eitanov, ending in a 4-4 tie, which ultimately resulted in a silver medal for him. Meanwhile, India also won a bronze in the 74 kg category, with Deepak defeating Turkmenistan’s Vatan Annairajov decisively with a score of 10-0.
Kumar Puneet added another silver medal to India’s tally in the 92 kg division after losing 1-12 to Kyrgyzstan’s Ulukbek Sorombekov in the championship bout. Sachin also secured a bronze medal in the 86 kg category with a commendable 4-1 victory over Boburabek Ruzimboyev. In the 125 kg category, Lakhi had to settle for a silver medal after facing a 0-10 defeat against Kazakhstan’s Rizabek Aitmakhan in the title match.
Sanjay Singh, President of the Wrestling Federation of India, stated, “The freestyle squad has performed exceptionally well over the past two days. With four gold, two silver, and two bronze medals so far, this is a positive sign. Mohit and Chandramohan delivered impressive performances to win their titles. Both Deepaks gave their all on the mat. I congratulate the boys and coaching staff for these results. We hope to win more medals by the end of the day.”
