Major Gold Scam Uncovered in Mumbai: Accused Arrested in West Bengal

Mumbai, May 26: A significant breakthrough has been achieved by the Shivaji Nagar police in a case involving the alleged embezzlement of gold worth crores in Mumbai. The police have arrested the fugitive accused, Tanmay Maity (30), in West Bengal. The court has placed him under transit remand until May 30, and police are currently conducting intensive questioning.

According to police reports, Sanjay Magaraj Jain, a jeweler from Prabhadevi, filed a complaint regarding the case. The complaint states that Tanmay Maity had been preparing gold jewelry for jewelers for several years. Through his conduct and business dealings, he gained the trust of these traders. This trust led to him being entrusted with large quantities of gold for jewelry production.

On May 14 and 15, 2026, Sanjay Jain sent a total of 2.25 kilograms of 24-carat gold to the accused’s factory in Dadar through his employees. The estimated value of this gold is approximately ₹3.53 crore.

On May 20, when contacted regarding the delivery of the jewelry, the accused assured that the finished products would be delivered soon. However, by May 22, the complainant discovered that the accused had closed his factory and had gone into hiding. His mobile phone was also found switched off, raising further suspicions.

During the investigation, it also emerged that the accused had allegedly targeted other jewelers. Additionally, a case of embezzlement involving approximately ₹12 lakh worth of gold from several shops, including Pandurang Hari Vaidya and Sons Jewelers in Dadar, has also come to light.

According to police, the accused is charged with embezzling nearly 2.959 kilograms of gold valued at ₹4.51 crore. Following the registration of the case, the Shivaji Nagar police have been actively searching for him. Based on technical investigations and intelligence, the police team apprehended the accused in West Bengal.

Currently, the police are working to determine where the allegedly embezzled gold has been disposed of and who else may be involved in this case.
