Harshad Parmar Takes Oath as MLA After By-Election Victory in Gujarat

Gandhinagar, May 26: After winning the Umreth by-election, newly elected BJP MLA Harshad Parmar took his oath as a member of the Gujarat Assembly on Tuesday. The ceremony took place at the assembly complex in Gandhinagar, where Speaker Shankar Chaudhary administered the oath.

The oath-taking event was attended by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Chief Whip of the Assembly Balkrishna Shukla, Minister of Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Rishikesh Patel, other cabinet members, and legislators.

Harshad Parmar was elected to the Assembly earlier this month, successfully retaining the Umreth seat for the BJP. This by-election became necessary following the passing of the incumbent MLA Govind Parmar due to illness.

The BJP fielded Harshad Parmar, the son of the late MLA, for this crucial election. This was his first major electoral contest.

According to the Election Commission, he defeated Congress candidate Bhriguraj Singh Chauhan by a margin of over 30,000 votes. Harshad Parmar received 85,500 votes, while Chauhan garnered 54,757 votes.

Parmar dedicated his victory to his late father and expressed gratitude to the voters of the constituency, who turned out in large numbers despite the intense heat.

Describing the by-election results as historic, Parmar stated that the support reflects the goodwill earned by his father through years of service in the constituency. He acknowledged the unwavering support from the people, which contributed to his significant victory.

The by-election for the Umreth Assembly seat was held on April 23, with the counting of votes taking place on May 4.

Reports indicate that the party secured nearly 59 percent of the votes in the constituency. Since 2017, support for the BJP in this area has consistently strengthened.

This Assembly constituency is part of Anand district and the Anand Lok Sabha constituency. Parmar will now represent this constituency in the 182-member house, taking over his father’s position.
