Delhi Metro Launches Clothing Collection Initiative to Promote Recycling

New Delhi, May 26: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is spearheading a new initiative aimed at environmental protection and sustainable development in the capital. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will install special collection boxes at ten major metro stations, allowing residents to donate their unwanted clothing. These garments will be recycled into useful products.

Chief Minister Gupta emphasized that the Delhi government is committed to creating a clean, green, and environmentally responsible capital. Textile waste is a growing environmental challenge, and this initiative will ensure that old clothes are recycled scientifically. This will not only reduce waste but also strengthen sustainable development efforts.

The ten metro stations selected for this initiative include Shahdara (Red Line), Mohan Estate (Violet Line), Rohini West (Red Line), Lajpat Nagar (Violet and Pink Line), Malviya Nagar (Yellow Line), Mayur Vihar Phase-I (Blue and Pink Line), Hauz Khas (Yellow and Magenta Line), Punjabi Bagh West (Pink and Green Line), Dwarka (Blue Line), and Shalimar Bagh (Pink Line).

These stations were chosen by the operations department, and the safety team has reviewed the sites.

The Chief Minister stated that the goal of this initiative is to engage the public in recycling campaigns and raise awareness about the reuse of clothing. The Delhi government is committed to promoting community-based environmental campaigns.

Gupta also assured that the collected clothing will be utilized in an environmentally friendly manner, maintaining transparency and effectiveness throughout the process. The collected garments will be categorized and made available for reuse and upcycling through reputable NGOs and self-help groups (SHGs). Various useful products, such as bags and mats, will be created from these clothes. The DMRC will also provide special spaces at selected metro stations for the display and sale of these upcycled products. Additionally, any remaining clothing will be sent to recycling units to be transformed into yarn, fiber, and non-woven felt, ensuring minimal waste.

To implement this plan, the DMRC’s Civil (O&M) department has reached out to various agencies. One company has expressed interest in installing collection boxes at the identified stations. Site inspections have already been conducted by company representatives, who specialize in producing recycled yarn, fiber, and non-woven products.

According to the DMRC, the branding of the selected collection areas will be done under the name of the Delhi Metro Ladies Welfare Organization (DMLWO). Formal procedures related to the installation of collection boxes, branding, and the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) are currently underway.

The Chief Minister indicated that the official launch of this project will take place once all processes are completed.
