Raipur, December 3 (Daily Kiran) – Despite stellar centuries from star batsman Virat Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad, South Africa achieved a thrilling four-wicket victory while chasing down a target of 359 runs in the second ODI at Raipur on Wednesday, leveling the three-match series 1-1.
Batting first, India posted a massive total of 358/5. After early setbacks with Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal’s dismissals, Kohli (102) and Gaikwad (105) steadied the innings with a brilliant 195-run partnership for the third wicket. Captain KL Rahul remained unbeaten on 66, while Ravindra Jadeja and Suryakumar Yadav accelerated in the final overs to put India in a strong position.
South Africa responded aggressively to the challenge. Captain Aiden Markram played a magnificent knock of 110 runs, recovering from early setbacks. He formed crucial partnerships with Temba Bavuma (46) and Matthew Breetzke (68). Dewald Brevis scored a blistering half-century, bringing the match within South Africa’s grasp.
In the final moments, Tony de Zorzi retired hurt due to injury, but Corbin Bosch and Keshav Maharaj kept their composure to guide South Africa to the target with four balls remaining. This became South Africa’s third-highest successful ODI run chase.
India fell short in this match due to poor bowling performance and missed opportunities to take wickets during the middle overs. While the batting shone for the second consecutive match, bowling proved to be the weak link.
The third and deciding match of the series will be played on Saturday in Visakhapatnam, where both teams will battle for the series title.
