Geneva, May 19: Casper Ruud kicked off the Geneva Open with a confident performance on Tuesday. The clay court specialist defeated Jenson Brooksby in straight sets, securing his place in the second round of the tournament in Switzerland.
The world number 17 took just 92 minutes to clinch the victory with a score of 6-3, 7-5. Ruud showcased his signature heavy topspin and baseline control, maintaining dominance throughout the match without losing his grip.
This latest win adds to Ruud’s busy and successful clay court season, where he has regained his rhythm after a grueling schedule. Just days ago, he reached a major final in Rome, where he was defeated by world number one, Jannik Sinner. Sinner recently became only the second player in history to complete the Career Golden Masters.
Despite a packed match schedule, Ruud appeared physically refreshed and strategically sharp in Geneva. He hit 21 winners while limiting his unforced errors to just 12, demonstrating control during crucial moments of the match.
Brooksby, ranked 60th, struggled once again to find his footing on clay, marking his fifth consecutive loss on this surface this season. The slow conditions of clay courts have consistently exposed weaknesses in his defensive play. Earlier in the year, he had a strong showing on hard courts, including a quarterfinal appearance in February, but he could not replicate that level of play in Switzerland.
Ruud, a two-time French Open finalist, has an impressive record in Geneva, having won this ATP 250 tournament three times before. He looks to continue his strong clay court performance as he prepares to face either Adrian Mannarino or Rafael Collignon in the next round.
On day three, Alexei Popyrin secured a hard-fought victory against French qualifier Clément Tabur in a three-set battle, winning 7-6(2), 6-7(5), 6-4. This win sets up a matchup against top seed Taylor Fritz in the second round.
Fritz is making his return to competition for the first time since March in Miami, and he will face a tough test following Popyrin’s impressive performance.
Eighth seed Jaume Munar also advanced easily, defeating American qualifier Nishesh Basavareddy 6-0, 6-3 in just 75 minutes. The Spanish player will next face Argentina’s Francisco Comesana as the tournament progresses.
