Mumbai, June 1: Political rhetoric has intensified in Maharashtra following deaths caused by toxic alcohol consumption in the Pimpri-Chinchwad area of Pune. Anand Dubey, spokesperson for Shiv Sena (UBT), has called for strict government action and a complete ban on illegal liquor trade.
In an interview with a news agency on Saturday, Dubey emphasized the seriousness of these incidents, stating that strengthening law and order has become imperative. He noted discrepancies in reported death tolls, with figures ranging from 15 to 20, but confirmed that multiple lives have been lost, and many others are still receiving treatment in hospitals.
Dubey attributed these tragedies to the rampant sale of illegal and toxic alcohol. He warned that if the sale of illicit liquor, available for as low as 20 rupees, is not curtailed, such incidents will continue to occur. He stressed the need for criminals to fear the law to effectively curb these occurrences.
He further stated that enhancing law and order in the state is crucial. Dubey accused criminals of operating without fear and urged the administration to adopt a stricter approach. He pointed out that other states have successfully taken strong actions against criminals, and Maharashtra should follow suit.
Dubey described the situation as affecting not just the deceased but also devastating the lives of their families. He advocated for a comprehensive campaign to eradicate the illegal liquor trade entirely, rather than merely addressing individual incidents.
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena spokesperson Raju Waghmare also commented on the tragedy, labeling it extremely unfortunate. He assured that both the government and the party are sensitive to the plight of the bereaved families.
Waghmare stated that the government has acted swiftly in this matter, taking several steps, including suspending some police officers and arresting multiple individuals involved. He reported that over 15 arrests have been made so far, with investigations ongoing.
He added that the case will be expedited through fast-track courts to ensure swift justice for the victims. Waghmare acknowledged that such incidents often occur covertly, despite police oversight, but assured that the government is committed to holding responsible parties accountable.
