Amethi, August 2 (H.S.) — After reports of leopard attacks in Bahraich district, residents of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh are now living in fear as a leopard has attacked and injured at least five people in two villages — Bhaipur and Biraipur — under Musafirkhana tehsil. The wild animal was reportedly seen roaming in the area until late evening on Saturday, prompting urgent rescue and relief efforts by the police and forest department teams.

The latest incident occurred Saturday afternoon when three villagers were applying fertilizer in their fields in Bhaipur. Due to the heat, they sat under a nearby tree to rest when the leopard suddenly emerged from the bushes and attacked them. All three suffered injuries. While two of them were discharged after treatment at the Musafirkhana Community Health Centre, one youth in serious condition was referred to Sultanpur District Hospital.

As panic spread, villagers informed local authorities. Sub-Divisional Magistrate Abhinav Kanojia and forest officials rushed to the spot. In a shocking turn, the leopard launched another attack in front of them, injuring a woman. She was quickly transported to the hospital by the forest ranger’s vehicle.

Later in the evening, the leopard reportedly moved towards Biraipur village and attacked again, bringing the total number of injured to five.

Villagers in both areas are frightened and staying indoors. The forest and police departments are conducting intensive combing operations. The forest department has also issued precautionary guidelines urging people to avoid venturing alone or at night near forested areas. Special care has been advised for children and the elderly, and people have been asked to secure livestock and inform authorities immediately upon spotting wild animals.

Amethi’s Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Ranveer Mishra confirmed that they received reports of leopard attacks near Bhaitpur, Biraipur, and Nevada villages around 1 p.m. on Saturday. Joint teams from the forest, police, and revenue departments visited the spot to assess the situation and spread awareness among locals. Efforts are underway to safely rescue the leopard in accordance with wildlife protocols.

To prevent further incidents and ensure public safety, an emergency response team has been formed and will be patrolling the area 24/7.
