New Delhi, May 25: The Indian tradition of yoga offers countless asanas aimed at harmonizing the body and mind, with Shirshasana being particularly beneficial for health. This pose not only helps maintain balance but also enhances concentration.
Shirshasana is derived from two Sanskrit words: ‘Shirsha’ (head) and ‘Asana’ (posture). Often referred to as the “king of asanas,” regular practice strengthens the shoulders, arms, and core muscles.
According to the Ministry of AYUSH, Shirshasana is an advanced and effective yoga pose that aids in enhancing physical strength, mental clarity, and self-confidence. It is also believed to bring a natural glow to the face, reduce hair fall, and promote hair growth.
This pose can provide relief from digestive issues such as constipation, gas, and indigestion. The inverted position improves blood circulation throughout the body, particularly aiding the digestive process.
Practicing Shirshasana enhances blood flow to the head. When a person is inverted, blood circulation to the brain increases. However, the benefits related to blood pressure depend on an individual’s physical condition. Therefore, those with high blood pressure or other serious health issues should consult a specialist before practicing this pose.
To perform Shirshasana, start by placing your feet against a wall and gradually lift them upwards. Balance your body weight on your hands and arms. Carefully place your head on the mat and slowly raise your legs until your body reaches the correct Shirshasana position. Maintaining balance is crucial, with the arms and shoulders playing a significant role. Beginners are advised to use the wall for support for safety and convenience.
Initially, practice this pose for only 10 to 30 seconds. With regular practice, individuals can gradually increase the duration according to their capacity.
