Bangladesh High Commissioner Pranay Verma Bids Farewell to PM Tarique Rahman, Discusses Strengthening India-Bangladesh Cooperation

Dhaka, May 25: Pranay Verma, the High Commissioner of Bangladesh in India, reaffirmed India’s commitment to deepening multifaceted cooperation between India and Bangladesh. This initiative aims to benefit the citizens of both nations and enhance shared prosperity. The Indian High Commission in Bangladesh shared this information on Sunday.

On May 24, High Commissioner Verma had a farewell meeting with Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. During this meeting, Rahman expressed gratitude for Verma’s contributions to India-Bangladesh relations and extended best wishes for his upcoming assignment.

Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalidur Rahman was also present at this meeting. Both parties briefly discussed potential areas of cooperation based on their respective developmental priorities.

In April, Pranay Verma was appointed as India’s next Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). Following this new responsibility, he is set to leave Dhaka on May 27. Former Union Minister Dinesh Trivedi has been appointed as the next High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh.

Dinesh Trivedi served as a Member of Parliament for Barrackpore from 2009 to 2019 and has previously been a member of the Rajya Sabha multiple times.

Earlier this year, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar met with Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalidur Rahman in New Delhi. Humayun Kabir, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh’s advisor on foreign affairs, was also present at that meeting.

During their discussions, Jaishankar reiterated India’s desire to engage constructively with Bangladesh’s new government to strengthen bilateral relations.

The Ministry of External Affairs reported that both countries agreed to work on proposals to deepen their partnership through relevant bilateral mechanisms. More official meetings are expected soon. Both sides also shared views on regional and global issues of mutual importance.

During this time, Foreign Minister Khalidur Rahman also met with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri.
