Punjab Government Adjusts Office and School Hours Amid Heatwave

Chandigarh, May 25: In response to the intense heat and ongoing heatwave, the Punjab government has announced significant changes to the operating hours of government offices and schools. Starting today, all government offices and classes will run from 7:30 AM to 1:30 PM. This decision aims to provide relief from the heatwave and reduce electricity consumption.

The government’s move has been welcomed by employees and the general public. One government employee stated that this decision is timely, as the rising temperatures lead to increased air conditioning use, resulting in higher electricity consumption. The change in hours will not only provide relief to employees but also contribute to energy savings.

Another employee noted that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had made a similar decision last year, and this year’s adjustment is also in the public’s interest. A different employee expressed that altering the schedule is a positive step that will significantly benefit the general populace.

Mohali’s Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal explained that, considering the heatwave, the Punjab government has modified the hours for government offices and service centers to operate from 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM. She emphasized that this decision, made under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s directives, prioritizes public health and energy conservation. The aim is to alleviate the heat’s impact on residents while also reducing air conditioning usage.

Support for the government’s decision also came from Amritsar’s Additional Deputy Commissioner Rupinder Pal Singh. He remarked that the current extreme heat makes this decision crucial. He advised that it becomes quite challenging to be outdoors after 1:30 PM, urging all employees and residents to arrive at their workplaces on time.

Additionally, an employee working in the Additional Deputy Commissioner’s office praised Chief Minister Mann’s decision, asserting that everyone will comply with the new hours. He reiterated that this change will provide considerable relief from the heat for both employees and the general public.
