Chennai, May 25: TTV Dhinakaran, the General Secretary of the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK), criticized the Tamil Nadu government on Monday regarding the safety of women and children. His remarks came in the wake of reports about the alleged sexual assault of an 11-year-old girl in Villupuram district.
Dhinakaran urged Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to focus more on public safety and to take stringent measures to prevent crimes against women and minors. He referenced media reports detailing the arrest of an individual accused of sexually assaulting the young girl in the Vandi Palayam area near Marakkanam.
According to reports, this incident has shocked local residents and reignited concerns about children’s safety in the state. Dhinakaran noted that this event occurred at a time when there was already significant anxiety and outrage regarding crimes against women and children in Tamil Nadu.
He pointed out that just as public anger over a recent incident in Coimbatore was beginning to subside, another alarming case has emerged. This incident involved the alleged kidnapping, sexual assault, and brutal murder of a 10-year-old girl near Sulur in Coimbatore district, which drew strong reactions from political parties and the public alike.
Dhinakaran emphasized that such recurring incidents raise serious questions about the safety of women and children. He questioned the Chief Minister’s silence on the matter, recalling previous statements and promises made by Vijay regarding women’s safety. The Chief Minister had previously expressed deep concern over crimes against women and portrayed himself as a protector of women and girls.
The AMMK leader challenged why the Chief Minister is now silent when incidents involving women and children continue to surface in the state. He stated that governments should focus on establishing stronger preventive measures rather than merely expressing sympathy.
Dhinakaran urged the Chief Minister to ensure that the accused in the Villupuram case receive the maximum punishment under the law and to prioritize the safety of children and women. He concluded by asserting that ensuring public safety should be among the government’s top priorities.
