NIA Conducts Raids in Kashmir Targeting Former Jamaat Leaders Residence

Srinagar, May 25: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) launched a series of raids across various locations in Kashmir on Monday as part of an ongoing investigation.

According to official sources, these operations are aimed at addressing alleged terrorist activities and anti-national networks in the regions of Srinagar and Shopian.

One of the significant raids took place at the Jamia Siraj-ul-Uloom in Imam Sahib. The central government had previously imposed a ban on this institution due to accusations of terrorist links and anti-national activities.

Additionally, another NIA team conducted a search at the residence of former Jamaat-e-Islami leader Shahzada Aurangzeb in the Molu Chitragam area of Shopian.

These operations were carried out by joint teams from the NIA, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the CRPF. Sources indicated that the raids are connected to an ongoing investigation, although officials have not yet disclosed specific details regarding the nature of the case or any arrests made during the operations.

In February 2024, the central government declared the Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir an “unlawful organization” under Section 3(1) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, for a period of five years.

Established in 1941, Jamaat-e-Islami has long faced allegations from security agencies of promoting terrorism, spreading anti-India propaganda, and encouraging separatist ideologies in Jammu and Kashmir.

Last year, while announcing the continuation of the ban on the organization, Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that this move aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s “zero tolerance” policy against terrorism and separatism.

Previously, the central government had first imposed a ban on Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir in February 2019, just months before the abrogation of Article 370 in the region.
