Calicut, August 14 (Kiran News): In a landmark medical achievement, Aster MIMS, Calicut, has successfully conducted Kerala’s first—and the country’s fifth—Fetal Balloon Aortic Valvotomy, a rare and intricate keyhole heart valve intervention, on a six-month-old fetus of a 25-year-old expectant mother, Muhsina.

The case came to light when a scan at another hospital revealed that the unborn baby’s aortic valve was severely narrowed, drastically reducing the pumping efficiency of the left ventricle and putting the baby’s life at severe risk. Seeking advanced care, Muhsina and her husband consulted Dr. Renu P. Kurup, Paediatric Cardiologist at Aster MIMS Calicut, who recommended the high-risk procedure—previously performed only four times in India.

Procedure and Outcome

Initially, the intervention was postponed due to the fetus’s unfavourable position. Three days later, once the position was optimal, anaesthesia was administered to both mother and baby, and the cardiac team performed the procedure. It was completed successfully, with both remaining stable under close observation.

“This intervention was our only chance to save the baby. It was a high-risk case, but the family’s determination, coupled with the hospital’s advanced facilities and constant team support, made it possible,” said Dr. Renu.

Months later, Muhsina delivered a healthy baby, followed by a successful Post-Natal Balloon Aortic Valvotomy. Expressing gratitude, she said, “The reason behind my baby’s healthy smile is the grace of God and the care we received at Aster MIMS Calicut.”

Hospital Support and Medical Team

Lukman Ponmadath, COO of Aster MIMS Calicut, called the achievement a “historic moment in Kerala’s medical history” and confirmed that the hospital bore the entire treatment cost.

The multidisciplinary team included Dr. Edwin Francis, Dr. Renu P. Kurup, Dr. Remadevi K.S, Dr. Annu Jose, Dr. P.S. Priya, Dr. Nabeel Faisal, Dr. Swetha Thapa, Dr. Sujatha, Dr. Rainu, Dr. Nashra, Dr. P.S. Sreeja, Dr. Girish Warrier, Dr. Shabareenath Menon, and Dr. Uma Radhesh.
