Heatwave Alert for Jammu: Dry and Hot Weather Expected in Kashmir

Srinagar, May 18: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave warning for Jammu over the next 24 hours. Mukhtar Ahmed, the director of IMD Srinagar, stated that Jammu will experience high temperatures, while Kashmir will also see a rise in heat and dry conditions. However, strong winds in the afternoon may provide some relief.

The temperature in the valley has reached 38 degrees Celsius, while Jammu recorded a scorching 40 degrees Celsius. Residents of Jammu are advised to prepare for the heatwave, particularly in certain districts, especially in the plains. The valley is expected to remain hot and dry, with a low chance of a heatwave in the next 24 hours.

Mukhtar Ahmed also mentioned that light rain and thunderstorms are anticipated starting tomorrow (Tuesday), continuing until May 25. Daily light rain is expected in the afternoons, with dry weather likely to return after May 25.

He noted that there is no forecast for rain between May 28-29. Today will remain hot, but some relief may come starting tomorrow.

Just a day prior, on May 17, the IMD had reported the possibility of light to moderate rain and strong winds in Jammu and Kashmir on May 19 and 20. Additionally, rainfall with thunder is expected in Maharashtra and Marathwada.

The weather department indicated that a heatwave will persist in western Rajasthan from May 17 to 22, with severe heatwave conditions possible in some areas on May 21 and 22.

Furthermore, the IMD warned that Uttar Pradesh may also experience a heatwave from May 17 to 22, with alerts for severe heatwave conditions issued for several regions between May 19 and 22. Other states, including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh, may also face extreme heat.
