Prime Minister Modi Arrives in Norway, Welcomed by PM Støre at Airport

Oslo, May 18: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Norway. He was warmly welcomed at the airport by Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, along with several officials from both countries. Modi expressed his gratitude for the warm reception through a social media post.

In his post on X, he stated, “I have arrived in Oslo. I am grateful to Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre for the warm welcome at the airport. This is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Norway in over four decades. I believe this trip will infuse new energy into India-Norway friendship. I will meet His Majesty King Harald V and Queen Sonja, and I will also hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Støre.”

This marks Modi’s first visit to Norway and the first by any Indian Prime Minister in 43 years.

Norway is a significant partner for India. Today, Modi will participate in bilateral meetings, and on Tuesday (May 19), he will attend the third India-Nordic Summit. This visit is expected to strengthen and energize India-Norway relations.

Economic ties between India and Norway have been steadily growing. Trade between the two countries has reached approximately $2.73 billion. Additionally, Norway’s sovereign wealth fund has invested nearly $28 billion in Indian markets. The total trade between India and the Nordic region is estimated at around $19 billion.

Leaders from Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, and Sweden will also participate in the Nordic summit. The India-Nordic summit began in 2018 in Stockholm, with the second summit held in Copenhagen in 2022.

This meeting is expected to cover critical issues such as green energy, digitalization, defense cooperation, space technology, Arctic policy, and sustainable development.

During his visit, PM Modi will engage in bilateral talks with Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. Important discussions regarding trade, investment, and technological cooperation are anticipated. Both Prime Ministers will address the India-Norway Business and Research Summit, focusing on economic and research collaboration. Modi will also meet with King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway.
