New Delhi, May 18: Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar expressed doubts about MS Dhoni’s potential return in the crucial match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Monday. He noted that the legendary captain has been away from competitive cricket for over a year and may not want to take such a risk.
Gavaskar emphasized the importance of the match at MA Chidambaram Cricket Stadium (Chepauk) for CSK’s playoff hopes. However, he believes the likelihood of Dhoni playing is low, despite fans hoping to see him in the team’s final home game of the season.
In an interview with ‘GeoStar’, Gavaskar stated, “The match against SRH is very important for CSK. It is their last home game at Chepauk, so naturally, fans want to see MS Dhoni play. However, he hasn’t played at all this season. In fact, he hasn’t participated in competitive cricket for over a year. Therefore, I doubt he would want to take such a risk at this time.”
The former captain stressed that CSK needs players who are already in form and ready for such a critical stage of the tournament. He added, “You need players who are match-fit and have been playing regularly for the past six weeks. Dhoni is a team player. I don’t think he would want to disrupt the current combination. If he plays against SRH, I would be very surprised. This is a crucial match for CSK. A win will keep them in the playoff race. Bringing in a player who hasn’t played for over a year could be a gamble.”
After 12 matches, Chennai Super Kings have accumulated 12 points. The team must win both of their remaining matches to secure a playoff spot. In their last match, they faced a 7-wicket defeat against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
