Srinagar, 2 January: The Economic Offence Wing of the Crime Branch in Srinagar has filed a chargesheet against 108 accused in a major corruption case involving embezzlement of government funds and illegal appointments.

The accused include 15 Executive Engineers, 6 Assistant Accounts Officers, 1 Accounts Assistant, 6 Head Assistants, 4 Senior Assistants, and other employees posted in the Electric Division Sumbal. The main accused, Mushtaq Ahmed Malik, a resident of Bandipora, is alleged to be the head of this racket. Efforts are underway to trace other involved individuals.

The chargesheet also names 25 officers and staff of Jammu and Kashmir Bank, Branch Sumbal Sonawari, along with 46 fake employees who were illegally appointed. The case came to light after credible information revealed that the Drawing and Disbursing Officer, in collusion with other officials and bank staff, withdrew crores of rupees from government accounts and facilitated bogus appointments.

Authorities stated that during the investigation, crores of rupees were recovered from the main accused Mushtaq Ahmed Malik and deposited back into the government treasury. Investigators also uncovered large transfers into Malik’s various bank accounts, including savings accounts, fixed deposits, and accrued interest. Gradually, the identities of all accused were established, and attempts are ongoing to identify other officials linked to the racket.

The case was registered following reliable information indicating that the Drawing and Disbursing Officer conspired with departmental and bank officials to fraudulently withdraw crores from government funds and assist in fake recruitments. The probe revealed extensive criminal activities, including misuse of government funds.

The government has approved prosecution against the accused individuals. The chargesheet has been submitted to the Special Judge, Anti-Corruption Court, Baramulla, for judicial proceedings.
