New Delhi, May 14: The Minister for Development of the Northeastern Region, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, launched the ‘Mizoram Ginger Mission’ on Wednesday. This initiative is a convergence-based effort worth ₹189.79 crores aimed at enhancing ginger cultivation and its value chain in the state.
The central minister emphasized that while the Geographical Indication (GI) certified Mizo ginger contains 6-8% oleoresin—significantly higher than the global average of around 3%—farmers currently receive only ₹8-15 per kilogram. In contrast, the international market value can exceed ₹500 per kilogram.
Scindia called for a decisive effort to “eliminate intermediaries” and strengthen cooperative and Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs). He presented this ₹190 crore initiative as the “Mizo Ginger Movement,” which is built on four strategic pillars: convergence, value addition, branding, and market integration.
He highlighted Prime Minister Modi’s commitment to ensuring that farmers become true stakeholders in the entire agricultural value chain, from “farm to plate.”
The minister stressed that the mission’s goal extends beyond mere crop cultivation. It aims to empower farmers to engage meaningfully in processing, branding, packaging, export-oriented value addition, and global market integration.
He noted that this mission will establish an integrated processing center and three support centers, along with over 30 strategic interventions. It is expected to connect approximately 20,000 farming families within an integrated value-chain ecosystem, focusing on traceability, uniqueness, quality assurance, and farmer-led value creation.
Scindia presented a clear global vision for Mizo ginger, targeting entry into Southeast Asian, Middle Eastern, and European markets. He stated that success will be achieved when Mizo ginger is available on global market shelves, identifiable to individual farmers, enabling them to reap direct economic benefits.
Mizoram’s Chief Minister, Zoramthanga, expressed deep appreciation to the Ministry of Development of the Northeastern Region for conceptualizing and advancing the ginger mission, which he believes will mark a decisive turning point in the state’s agricultural and economic journey.
He added that this mission accurately recognizes the unique strength of Mizoram’s pharma-grade ginger and transforms it into a streamlined pathway for farmers’ prosperity, value addition, and global market integration.
The state government is fully committed to ensuring the timely implementation of this mission at the grassroots level.
