New Delhi, 20 August (Kiran News). India has achieved a major milestone in its defence capabilities with the successful test of the indigenously developed Agni-5 intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM). With this achievement, India firmly joins the select group of nations—after the US, Russia, China, France, and the UK—that possess intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) technology.

The test was conducted at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, Odisha, and marks a significant step in boosting India’s strategic power. The Defence Ministry confirmed the successful launch, stating that all operational and technical parameters were met under the supervision of the Strategic Forces Command.
Before the test, India issued a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) to restrict air and sea space, ensuring safety in a designated area. The distance of this NOTAM was later extended to allow for a full-range trial, showcasing the missile’s capability of striking targets over 5,000 kilometres. The Agni-5 can now reach any corner of neighbouring adversary nations.
Key Features and Significance of Agni-5
Agni-5 is an intercontinental ballistic missile developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). With a range of over 5,000 kilometres, it stands as one of India’s most advanced missiles. The three-stage, solid-fuel missile is 17 metres long, 2 metres wide, weighs about 50 tonnes, and is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead weighing up to 1.5 tonnes.
The missile is road-mobile and equipped with a canisterised launch system, enabling quick and easy deployment. This technology allows the missile to be stored and transported for long durations and to be launched instantly when required. It also includes advanced navigation and guidance systems, such as a ring laser gyroscope and accelerometer, ensuring high accuracy.
Strategic Importance for India
This test is aligned with India’s policy of ‘credible minimum deterrence’ and its commitment to ‘No First Use’. The doctrine dictates that nuclear weapons are to be used only in self-defence, with enough strength to deter any nuclear attack on the country. The Agni-5’s extensive range enables it to target all of Asia, northern China, and parts of Europe.
