Chennai, May 18: Heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu has provided much-needed relief from the heat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts that atmospheric circulation in the southern region is influencing weather patterns, with more rain expected across the state in the coming days.
According to weather officials, one atmospheric circulation is located over the Kanyakumari Sea and surrounding areas, while another is affecting northeastern Tamil Nadu and nearby regions. These systems led to significant rainfall in several districts on Sunday.
Moderate rain was reported around Hosur and Krishnagiri districts. In Shivaganga and nearby areas, heavy rain accompanied by strong winds lasted for over an hour, offering respite from the heat.
In Dindigul district, Palani and Kodaikanal experienced nearly two hours of rain, resulting in waterlogging on several roads. Theni district also saw moderate rain for more than half an hour in Periyakulam and surrounding areas.
Continuous rain with thunder and lightning was recorded in several parts of Madurai and Pudukkottai. In Nagapattinam district, water accumulated in low-lying areas at various locations.
The weather department has predicted heavy rainfall for Monday in the Nilgiri, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, and Shivaganga districts.
Heavy rain along with strong winds is also expected in Pudukkottai, Karur, Tiruchi, Erode, Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri, and Krishnagiri districts.
Forecasts indicate that heavy rain will continue on Tuesday in the hilly areas of Coimbatore and Tiruppur, as well as in Nilgiri, Theni, Dindigul, and Madurai districts. Some areas in Chennai may experience moderate rain with thunder and lightning. Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon is anticipated to arrive in Kerala around May 26.
