New Delhi, May 18: Residents of the National Capital Region (NCR) are bracing for extreme heat and a heatwave over the next two days. According to the latest forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), temperatures could soar above 44 to 45 degrees Celsius on May 19 and 20.
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for these two days, advising the public to exercise caution during the afternoon hours. The seven-day forecast indicates that on May 18, the maximum temperature is expected to reach 44 degrees, with a minimum of 26 degrees Celsius. Strong surface winds are also anticipated throughout the day. However, no specific warnings have been issued for May 18.
The heat is expected to intensify on May 19, with maximum temperatures predicted to hit 44 degrees and minimums around 28 degrees Celsius. A heatwave is likely to occur, with warnings that hot winds will cause discomfort during the afternoon and evening. Similarly, no relief is expected on May 20.
On that day, the maximum temperature may remain at 44 degrees, with a minimum of 27 degrees Celsius. The IMD has warned that heatwave conditions will persist both during the day and in the evening. Slight relief may be observed on May 21 and 22, with maximum temperatures dropping to around 42 degrees and minimums at 27 degrees Celsius. Nonetheless, strong surface winds are expected to continue.
In light of the extreme heat and potential heatwave, health experts recommend that individuals avoid going outside between 12 PM and 4 PM. Special caution is advised for the elderly, children, and those with health issues. Doctors emphasize the importance of staying hydrated by consuming plenty of water, ORS, and other fluids.
The IMD also advises people to cover their heads when outdoors, wear light-colored cotton clothing, and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. With the rising temperatures, disruptions to daily life in the NCR are anticipated.
