Chennai, May 18: Heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu has provided much-needed relief from the heat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts that atmospheric circulation in the southern region is affecting weather patterns, with more rain expected across the state in the coming days.
According to weather officials, one atmospheric circulation is located over the Kanyakumari Sea and surrounding areas, while another is present over northeastern Tamil Nadu and nearby regions. These systems have caused heavy rainfall in several districts on Sunday.
Moderate rain was reported around Hosur and Krishnagiri districts. In contrast, heavy rain accompanied by strong winds lasted for over an hour in Shivaganga and surrounding areas, offering respite from the heat.
In Dindigul district, Palani and Kodaikanal experienced nearly two hours of rain, leading to waterlogging on several roads. Similarly, moderate rain persisted for over half an hour in Periyakulam and nearby areas in Theni district.
Continuous rain with thunder and lightning was observed in several parts of Madurai and Pudukkottai. In Nagapattinam district, water accumulated in low-lying areas at various locations.
The weather department has predicted heavy rainfall on Monday in the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, and Shivaganga districts.
Heavy rain with strong winds is also anticipated in Pudukkottai, Karur, Tiruchi, Erode, Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri, and Krishnagiri districts.
Forecasts indicate that heavy rain will continue on Tuesday in the hilly areas of Coimbatore and Tiruppur, as well as in the Nilgiris, Theni, Dindigul, and Madurai districts. Chennai may experience moderate rain with thunder and lightning in some areas. Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon is expected to make its arrival in Kerala around May 26.
