Dehradun, May 18: In the sacred land of Uttarakhand, nestled among towering Himalayan peaks, the chants of “Om Namah Shivaya” resonate at Rudranath Dham. On Monday, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami shared insights about the grandeur of this temple.
He posted a video of the temple on the social media platform X, stating, “Located amidst the enchanting valleys of Chamoli district, the holy Rudranath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is known as the fourth Kedara among the Panch Kedars. This temple serves as a vital center of faith and devotion.”
CM Dhami praised the temple, noting, “Here, the divine ‘mukh’ (face) of Mahadev is worshipped, giving this sacred site unique religious and spiritual significance. Be sure to visit this holy temple during your journey to Chamoli district.”
Far removed from the world’s distractions, this temple remains a steadfast center of Sanatan culture and unwavering faith. Visitors come from afar to witness its magnificence. Located at an altitude of approximately 2,290 meters above sea level in Chamoli district, the Rudranath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, where the worship of his face (Ekadash Rudra) takes place.
The sanctum sanctorum of this temple is a natural cave. Here, only the face of Lord Shiva, also known as ‘Neelkanth Mahadev,’ is worshipped. It is believed that the Shivling here was established by the Pandavas themselves. Visitors can also see the snow-capped peaks of Nanda Devi, Nanda Ghunti, and Trishul Mountain right in front of the temple.
During the winter season, when the temple doors close, the festive palanquin of Rudranath is moved to the secret temple in Gopeshwar, where winter worship takes place. Typically, devotees begin their trek from ‘Sagar Village,’ located near Gopeshwar. The distance from Sagar Village to the temple is approximately 20 kilometers, which is usually covered in 2-3 days through dense forests and grassy meadows.
