New Delhi, February 18: Central Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has addressed the controversy surrounding the robodog at Galgotias University. He stated that immediate action has been taken wherever wrongdoing has occurred.
In a media interaction, Minister Vaishnaw remarked, “The AI Summit showcased some excellent solutions. If any mistakes were made here, prompt action has been taken. We should also consider the other good solutions presented.”
Earlier, government sources indicated that Galgotias University, facing backlash over the Chinese robodog, was asked to withdraw from the ‘India AI Impact Summit.’
However, the university clarified that its intent was to familiarize students with new innovations in artificial intelligence. They never claimed the robot as their own product.
The controversy began when Galgotias University displayed a surveillance robotic dog at the ongoing AI Summit at Bharat Mandapam. A video featuring a professor representing the university went viral, where she explained the robot’s features. It was later revealed that the robodog was actually manufactured in China.
In the video clip, the university representative claimed that the robot was developed at their Center of Excellence. Nonetheless, many social media users alleged that the robodog was an AI-powered unit sourced from China’s Unitree Go2.
Numerous users on social media demanded action against the university, insisting that it acknowledge its mistake and apologize for embarrassing the nation.
Following the uproar, the university issued a statement. They emphasized their commitment to exposing students to new innovations by bringing in technological advancements from around the world, focusing on building indigenous capabilities.
In a post on ‘X’, the university stated, “At Galgotias, faculty and students are troubled by the propaganda campaign against our university. We want to clarify that robotic programming is part of our efforts to teach students AI programming and develop real-world skills using tools and resources available globally, as developing AI talent is essential today.”
The university’s vision centers on enhancing student learning and innovation, providing access to modern technology so they can gain practical experience and prepare for the future.
The post on ‘X’ concluded, “Spreading negativity can demoralize students who are working hard to innovate, learn, and build their skills using global technology.”
