Jaipur, August 13 (Kiran News) – The Rajasthan government has decided not to hold student union elections in the state’s universities and colleges during the current academic session 2025–26. The government submitted its response to the High Court on Wednesday, with a single bench scheduled to hear the matter on Thursday.

In its reply, the state government stated that the decision was taken for solid reasons and in the larger interest of students. It explained that due to the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, conducting student union elections this session was not feasible.
The reply further mentioned that a meeting chaired by the Additional Chief Secretary for Higher Education was held on August 6 to discuss the smooth implementation of NEP and the academic session. Vice Chancellors from various universities attended, including Rajasthan University’s Alpana Kateja, Gangasingh University Bikaner’s Manoj Dixit, Brij University’s Acting VC Tribhuwan Sharma, Udaipur University’s Sunita Mishra, Shekhawati University’s Anil Roy, Tribal University Banswara’s K.S. Thakur, Kota University’s Bhagwati Prasad Saraswat, MBM Jodhpur’s Ajay Sharma, and MDS University’s Suresh Kumar Agrawal, along with the Commissioner of College Education.
The Vice Chancellors agreed that student union elections disrupt academic activities and create an unfavourable atmosphere in colleges and universities. They also noted that both students and faculty have yet to fully understand the NEP.
The government’s reply referred to the Lyngdoh Committee’s recommendation that student union elections should be held within six to eight weeks of the start of the academic session. This period has already passed, making elections inappropriate at this stage. It also argued that not holding elections would not harm the petitioners’ interests and requested the court to dismiss the petitions.
Notably, university student Jai Rao and others had filed petitions in the High Court seeking the conduct of student union elections. The court had earlier sought responses from the state government and university administrations during preliminary hearings.
