Chamoli, Uttarakhand, 23 August (Kiran News): A devastating cloudburst struck the Tharali region of Chamoli district late Thursday night, leaving two people missing and causing widespread destruction. Heavy debris and rainwater inundated several houses and roads, completely disrupting traffic in the affected areas.

According to local sources, the cloudburst occurred around midnight in the Radibagad area when residents were fast asleep. Torrential rain accompanied by debris swept through the region, damaging homes and infrastructure. Reports confirm that two individuals are missing.
SDM Residence Also Hit
The disaster did not spare government premises either. Debris entered the official residences of Tharali’s Nagar Palika Chairman and the SDM, causing extensive damage. Locals reported that several vehicles were buried under the debris, with some completely destroyed. In Sagwada village, a girl is said to have been trapped inside her house under the debris, while a man reportedly went missing from Chepado Bazaar.
Roads Blocked with Debris
After the cloudburst, roads in Radibagad and surrounding areas turned into rivers of mud and debris. Heavy rainfall and landslide material have made the roads impassable. Local administration and Border Roads Organisation (BRO) teams are working to clear the routes, but continuous rainfall and debris are hindering relief operations. Traffic movement on the National Highway has also come to a halt.
