Karnataka Government Launches LED Van Campaign to Promote PM Surya Home Scheme

Bengaluru, May 20: The Karnataka Energy Department’s Additional Chief Secretary, Gaurav Gupta, inaugurated a state-wide LED mobile van awareness campaign from the Bengaluru Electricity Supply Company office on Wednesday. This initiative aims to promote the Prime Minister’s Surya Home Scheme, which provides free electricity and encourages the installation of rooftop solar systems across the state.

This campaign is part of the “Solar Energy Month – May 2026,” designed to raise awareness about the rooftop solar energy systems, subsidies, registration processes, and long-term savings available under this central government scheme.

Speaking at the event, Gaurav Gupta stated that the 15-day awareness campaign will operate through LED-equipped mobile vans in major cities, including Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mangaluru, Hubli-Dharwad, and Kalaburagi.

He noted that the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is implementing the Prime Minister’s Surya Home Scheme nationwide to encourage domestic consumers to adopt rooftop solar energy systems.

The nodal agency for Karnataka, the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company, has been tasked with conducting awareness activities, implementation, and monitoring of the scheme across all electricity supply company areas in the state.

According to Gupta, a total of 19,293 rooftop solar systems have been installed under this scheme in Karnataka, with a combined capacity of 77.5 megawatts. In the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company area alone, 7,992 solar systems with a combined capacity of 35.57 megawatts have been commissioned.

He emphasized that this scheme offers significant long-term financial and environmental benefits to consumers. Additionally, consumers can export excess electricity generated from rooftop solar systems back to the power grid and receive payments from electricity supply companies for the surplus units supplied. The awareness campaign aims to educate the public about these advantages.

Under the Prime Minister’s Surya Home Scheme, domestic consumers can receive subsidies of up to ₹30,000 for a 1-kilowatt rooftop solar system, ₹60,000 for a 2-kilowatt system, and ₹78,000 for systems with a capacity of over 3 kilowatts.
