Nahan, August 3 (H.S.): A major tragedy was narrowly avoided on Saturday morning when a massive landslide occurred near Haivna on National Highway NH-707 in Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmaur district. The incident took place around 5:00 AM, causing complete blockage of the highway and bringing traffic on both sides to a standstill.

Due to the landslide, hundreds of vehicles have been stranded on the highway, including ambulances, private vehicles, and passengers comprising elderly people, women, and children. The traffic jam has persisted for over three hours, leaving people without access to basic amenities like drinking water and sanitation.
Many farmers transporting their crops to nearby markets were also affected, with their produce left mid-route. Among the stranded are patients who are unable to reach hospitals in time, adding to the urgency of the situation.
Local residents have alleged that the area was already marked as landslide-prone, yet adequate safety measures were not implemented. Though administrative and construction agency machinery has reached the site, the clearing of large debris and rocks is taking considerable time.
According to a statement from the SDM office, work to reopen the route is underway at full speed and relief teams are actively engaged. The administration has urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and to cooperate patiently during the ongoing operations.
