Diana Schneider Stuns Aryna Sabalenka to Reach First Grand Slam Semifinal at French Open

Paris, June 4: In a remarkable upset, 22-year-old Diana Schneider from Russia shocked the world by defeating top seed Aryna Sabalenka in the women’s singles quarterfinals of the French Open. Despite trailing by a set and two breaks, Schneider rallied to win the last ten games, securing a 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 victory after a grueling 2 hours and 12 minutes at Roland Garros.

The 25th seed’s impressive comeback not only earned her a spot in her first Grand Slam semifinal but also ended Sabalenka’s streak of six consecutive major semifinal appearances.

At one point, Schneider appeared to be on the brink of defeat, as Sabalenka had built a significant lead, seemingly on her way to victory. However, Schneider demonstrated resilience, proving that one should never give up until the match is over. She began to turn the tide in the second set, when Sabalenka was serving for the match at 5-4 and just two points away from victory.

This was Schneider’s first encounter with a world number one player in her debut Grand Slam quarterfinal. Even with strong winds at Court Philippe-Chatrier, she maintained her composure and seized the opportunity to advance to the semifinals.

Despite trailing 6-3, 4-1, Schneider won 12 of the next 13 games, including the last ten in a row. In contrast, Sabalenka lost control of her game, committing 57 unforced errors, 17 of which came in the decisive set. This marked the first time since losing to Donna Vekic in the third set of the 2024 Dubai tournament that she lost a set 6-0.

A five-time champion on the WTA Tour, Schneider achieved her second top-10 victory in 16 matches, her first since defeating Coco Gauff in the third round of the 2024 Toronto event. She won the second set by claiming four consecutive games and also secured a crucial second game in the third set, winning ten straight games after trailing 3-5 in the second set.
