
Beijing, June 3: Chinese Vice President Han Cheng met with Michelle Bachelet, a candidate for the position of UN Secretary-General, in the capital city of Beijing on Wednesday. Both parties emphasized the importance of strengthening the role of the United Nations.
Han Cheng stated that the UN symbolizes the aspirations of people worldwide for lasting peace and shared prosperity. He highlighted President Xi Jinping’s concept of building a community with a shared future for mankind and the four global initiatives, which align with the spirit of the UN Charter.
He stressed that China is committed to supporting the UN in playing a central role alongside all parties and is prepared to promote the establishment of a more just and equitable global governance system. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China will sincerely fulfill its responsibilities, maintain a fair stance, defend the authority of the UN, and safeguard the shared interests of the Global South.
Bachelet praised China’s long-standing commitment to multilateralism and the objectives of the UN. She noted China’s support for the balanced advancement of the UN’s three pillars: peace, development, and human rights, adherence to the principle of leadership by member states, and its support for reforms aimed at enhancing the quality and efficiency of the UN.
Additionally, Bachelet expressed her views on strengthening the UN’s role while maintaining its fundamental mission and objectives in collaboration with China.
