New Delhi, June 4: A devastating fire at a bed-and-breakfast establishment in Malviya Nagar, Delhi, has resulted in the tragic loss of 21 lives. Local shopkeeper Armaan Mansoori and his father, Riyazuddin Mansoori, acted swiftly by laying out mattresses from their store, which helped save several individuals.
A resident of the area shared with news agencies, “Around 8:30 PM, we started smelling smoke. Sparks began to fly. The first spark was seen around 8 PM, but the fire brigade did not arrive until 9:40 PM. If they had come sooner, the damage could have been minimized.”
Shop owner Armaan Mansoori recounted, “I received a call around 8:30 PM that a fire had broken out in the neighboring hotel. People were screaming and trying to jump from the second and third floors. I took out 20-22 mattresses from my shop and laid them out. Many people jumped onto them and were saved.”
Vivek Agarwal, a resident of Malviya Nagar, lost his entire family in the fire. His neighbor, Yogendra Yadav, expressed his grief, stating, “Vivek was a very kind person. His whole family was wonderful. His wife runs an NGO. I spoke with him just three days ago. He has two daughters and a son who go to school. It’s hard to believe that an accident has taken away an entire family.”
Former Minister of State for External Affairs, Meenakshi Lekhi, visited the affected families. She remarked, “I have come to meet the impacted families. The heat is extreme, which contributes to such incidents. I am confident that the Delhi government will take necessary actions and ensure proper measures are implemented.”
Congress MP Rajeev Shukla described the incident as extremely tragic and urged Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to take action. He stated, “There have been several fire incidents in Delhi recently. I appeal to the Chief Minister to take an active role and ensure all necessary precautions are taken to prevent such occurrences in the future.”
Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu also expressed deep sorrow. He said, “I just returned from Punjab and was shocked to hear this news. It’s not just a matter of one life lost; many lives have been lost. I trust that our Chief Minister Rekha Gupta will take this matter seriously. Those responsible will be punished. The BJP is committed to ensuring such tragedies do not happen again. My condolences are with the affected families. Every life, whether a citizen or a foreigner, is invaluable.”
Delhi government minister Ashish Sood expressed concern over the administration’s response. He stated, “The entire administration is deeply saddened by this tragic incident. We will ensure that such events do not recur. The bed-and-breakfast was granted permission in 2024 for six rooms. We will conduct a thorough investigation and seal buildings that lack necessary NOCs and permits. Establishments violating regulations will have their licenses revoked.”
