ED Summons Abhishek Banerjee in Bengal School Recruitment Scam Investigation

Kolkata, June 4: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has issued a summons to Abhishek Banerjee as part of its investigation into the high-profile school recruitment scam in West Bengal. The Trinamool Congress General Secretary and Lok Sabha MP is required to appear at the ED office in the CGO Complex, Salt Lake, on June 15.

Sources indicate that on Wednesday, two ED officials visited Banerjee’s residence, ‘Shantiniketan’, located on Harish Mukherjee Road in South Kolkata, to deliver the summons in person. However, security personnel informed them that Banerjee had not been residing there for some time. The officials then proceeded to his other residence on Kalighat Road, near his aunt and former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee‘s house, but he was also absent there, preventing the delivery of the summons.

It is noteworthy that Banerjee’s name appears in the charge sheet filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is conducting a parallel investigation into the school recruitment case, although he has not been named as an accused. Similarly, the ED’s charge sheet also mentions him.

According to ED sources, he has been summoned again to clarify his alleged role in the case and to reach a logical conclusion in the investigation. His statement will be recorded on June 15.

Meanwhile, the West Bengal CID has also summoned Abhishek Banerjee for questioning on June 8. This inquiry is related to alleged discrepancies in the signatures of Trinamool legislators concerning a proposal for significant positions reserved for the opposition in the West Bengal Assembly.

However, Banerjee is scheduled to travel to New Delhi on June 8 to attend a crucial meeting of the opposition alliance, INDIA, alongside Mamata Banerjee.

In connection with this matter, Banerjee has approached the vacation bench of the Calcutta High Court, seeking protection from any harsh police action, including arrest, related to the signature discrepancy case. The hearing is expected to take place on Friday.
