Ayush Shetty Advances in Indonesia Open; Rohan and Ruthvika Also Progress

Jakarta, June 4: Former World Junior Bronze Medalist Ayush Shetty, along with the mixed doubles pair of Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani, has successfully reached the second round of the Indonesia Open Badminton Tournament held in Jakarta.

Shetty defeated China’s Weng Hongyang with scores of 8-21, 22-20, and 21-15. Meanwhile, the duo of Rohan and Ruthvika overcame the World No. 20 pair of Yang Po-Hsuan and Hu Ling-Fang from Chinese Taipei, winning 21-14, 21-14.

Ayush Shetty, a bronze medalist at the 2026 Thomas Cup, made a comeback after losing the first game against World No. 15 Weng. Although he initially lost the first game, Shetty gained a four-point lead in the second game, starting at 8-4. Weng quickly narrowed the gap and earned his second game point. With the score at 19-20, the Indian player secured three crucial points, pushing the match to a decisive third game.

The second game was tightly contested, but Shetty established a comfortable six-point lead, maintaining it to win the match in one hour and six minutes. He had previously defeated Weng in April during the Thomas Cup. Next, he will face Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu, who caused an upset by defeating the fourth-seeded Christo Popov.

In mixed doubles, Rohan and Ruthvika decisively beat the Taiwanese pair of Yang Po-Hsuan and Hu Ling-Fang in straight games, a match that lasted 34 minutes. In the next round, they will compete against the reigning champions, France’s Thom Giquel and Delphine Delrue.

Earlier, PV Sindhu began her Indonesia Open 2026 campaign with a victory over Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan, winning 25-23, 21-16.

In contrast, Lakshya Sen faced defeat against local favorite Alvi Farhan, losing 21-19, 21-16. Alvi had previously defeated World No. 1 Shi Yuqi at the Singapore Open last week. On Thursday, PV Sindhu will need to overcome the challenge posed by N Se-young in the women’s singles. Additionally, the pair of Hariharan and Arjun will compete against Malaysia’s Kang Khai Jing and Aaron Tai, both of whom advanced after their opponents Satwik and Chirag withdrew due to an injury sustained by Satwik during the first game.
