Patna, April 7: In response to the tragic incident involving toxic liquor in Motihari, officials in Bettiah, West Champaran, launched a vigorous campaign against the illegal liquor trade on Tuesday.
The police, in collaboration with the prohibition department, intensified raids across several police station areas, including Shikarpur, Nautan, and Majholia, as part of a district-wide operation aimed at dismantling the illegal liquor network. During a significant operation in the Shikarpur police station area, authorities destroyed sufficient raw materials for the production of approximately 3,500 liters of illicit liquor. Additionally, extensive searches were conducted in the Nautan and Majholia regions.
In the Dubariya village under the Nautan police station jurisdiction, police arrested Vishwajit Kumar, also known as Golden. They seized a total of 36 liters of foreign liquor hidden in a cornfield.
A police officer reported that the accused has a history of involvement in liquor smuggling. He was previously arrested in 2024 with 423 liters of alcohol.
Moreover, seven individuals were detained from various locations on charges of consuming alcohol. Cases have been registered against all under the Excise Act, and further legal action is underway.
Seema Chaurasia, Deputy Superintendent of the Prohibition Department, confirmed that surveillance has significantly increased, especially in border areas, following the Motihari liquor tragedy. She emphasized that the campaign against the production and smuggling of illegal liquor will continue vigorously to ensure strict enforcement of prohibition laws across the state.
This action demonstrates the administration’s firm resolve to prevent such tragic incidents from recurring and to dismantle the networks responsible for the illegal liquor trade.
The tragedy in East Champaran began on April 2, when several individuals fell ill after consuming counterfeit liquor in different areas. By April 4, officials reported seven fatalities, including Chandu Kumar, Pramod Kumar, Parikshit Manjhi, Hiralal Bhagat, Lakshman Rai, Sampat Sah, and Laddoo Sah. Subsequently, on April 5, Mo.
