Guwahati, February 23: The Assam government has distributed ₹120 crore in financial assistance under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM) during a grand event held at the Jyoti Bishnu Kala Mandir.

Several key initiatives aimed at strengthening rural livelihoods and enhancing digital access were launched at the event. These include the Chief Minister’s Utkarsh Scheme, the Krishi Sarthi app, the Inclusive Livelihood Scheme, and the Rural Forest app, all reflecting the government’s focus on inclusive development and technology-based service delivery in rural Assam.

Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, was the chief guest at the event, while Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma presided over the proceedings and announced new measures for farmers and rural infrastructure development.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Sarma announced a new scheme to provide financial and technical support to Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs). He stated that this initiative would help farmers take advantage of free trade agreements that India has with countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates.

“This will assist Assam in exporting its agricultural and horticultural products to global markets and increase farmers’ incomes,” said Chief Minister Sarma.

He also mentioned that Union Minister Chouhan has launched a new program under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), which will provide Assam with approximately 1,500 kilometers of new rural roads. The estimated cost of this project is around ₹2,000 crore, expected to significantly improve connectivity in the state’s remote and rural areas.

Minister Chouhan praised Assam’s efforts to strengthen rural development programs and affirmed the central government’s commitment to supporting the state’s initiatives aimed at empowering farmers and self-help groups.

The measures announced during the event are anticipated to boost rural livelihoods, promote agricultural exports, and accelerate infrastructure development, thereby strengthening Assam’s ongoing efforts towards sustainable and inclusive rural development.

A large number of farmers, women from self-help groups, and rural entrepreneurs attended the event. Beneficiary Jagarnath expressed that this assistance would be immensely helpful, stating, “It is very beneficial for us. We thank the government.”

Another beneficiary, Priyanka, shared that they are working on future plans. “We are planning to set up a processing unit to sell juice in the market. The government is farmer-friendly and is providing significant support,” she said.

She expressed hope that this assistance would create more local job opportunities and improve market access for their products.

Another farmer present at the event noted that both the Assam and central governments are working in the interest of farmers. He mentioned that they cultivate rice and buy produce from small farmers to sell in the market. With the funds received, they plan to establish a processing unit. “If these funds are used correctly, the goal of ‘Vocal for Local’ and the commitment to doubling farmers’ incomes will surely succeed,” he stated.

There was a palpable excitement among the farmers and self-help group members present at the event. They believe that this financial assistance will strengthen the rural economy and give local products a new identity.
